Saint Peter's Basilica

The Basilica of Saint Peter's is the protagonist of our Rome Tours symbol of the City and of Christendom, built on the site of the martyrdom of St. Peter.

The Basilica is one of the largest churches in the world that has seen the collaboration of great artists such as Michelangelo, Bramante and Bernini who dealt with renovating the building of the initial project.

Bramante was responsible for the total renovation of the building, giving it a Renaissance style and thinking of a dome at the center of the cross structure and supported by four pillars.

The dome was designed by Michelangelo, but he was unable to complete the work. One of his students finished it after his death. This construction marks the transition to the baroque architecture and surprising dimensions and harmony as well as being taken as a model around the world for other achievements.

The Baroque touch is visible in the colonnade of Bernini composed by 284 Doric columns and 88 pillars that surround the entire basilica Travertine thought of as the symbolic embrace of the faithful alike.

By choosing one of the Rome Guided Tours you can even see the inside of St. Peter's Basilica which has a prestigious hall, which introduces a unique majesty, full of charm and spirituality with a baroque stucco, mosaics and statues.
