Tour description

Italy breathes history, offering a window back into the past so clear you can almost touch it. You experience this everywhere in Italy's cities, especially Rome, Florence, and Naples. But while these cities have kept so much of their historical legacies intact, they have inevitably also modernized: meaning the cities you see are a mishmash or ancient, medieval, and modern. This is not the case in Pompeii. For here, on an October afternoon in 79 AD, time stood still. Forever.

Our Pompeii and Amalfi Coast Tour takes you on a historical and cultural journey through Southern Italy's most stunning sites. You'll explore the archaeological playground of Pompeii in the company of an expert historian. You'll venture along the Amalfi Coast where you can soak in its stunning panoramas. And you'll acquaint yourself with Ravello and its picturesque hilltop panoramic.

Encounter the ancients with a two-hour guided tour of Pompeii

The first destination on your tour is Pompeii: a prosperous Roman city that came to a sudden standstill. Your guide will walk you through Pompeii's vast site, giving you a real sense of the art, customs and lifestyle of the ancient inhabitants of this once rich and prosperous Roman city, destroyed by Vesuvius' eruption in 79 A.D.

You'll visit at least one of Pompeii's fascinating temporary exhibitions before accustomising yourself with the city by exploring its city wall and gates. Then we'll enter into the heart of Roman religious life at the Temple of Jupiter and Temple of Apollo. From resplendent temples to opulant villas, we'll make a stop at one of Rome's many "domus" (houses), marvelling at their remarkably preserved frescoes and other remains of these wealthy Roman residences.

Come face-to-face with Pompeii's plaster cast bodies

After exploring Pompeii's bathhouse, snack-bar, and - of course - the Pompeii Theater, we'll come face to face with some of the city's silent witnesses. Preserved in plaster of paris, the bodies offer the world's most powerful and poignant connection to ancient Rome. Witnessing them in their death throes means transporting yourself back 2,000 years. An unforgettable experience that will stay with your for a lifetime.

Set out on the famous Amalfi Coast road

To drive the Amalfi Coast is to live La Dolce Vita. The route winding south from Naples towards Sorrento offers breathtaking coastal views over the wild Mediterranean landscape with quirky pastel-coloured villages nestled between crystal seas and the clear blue sky. Leaving Pompeii, we will take this route. Our journey along the Amalfi Coast will take us past the holiday homes of the world's rich and famous as at our own pace we make our way towards the enchanting town of Ravello.

Wander the chic and elegant town of Ravello

Nestled into mountains perched some 365 meters above the Mediterrranean, the medival town of Ravello continues to captivate its visitors. Free from the bustle you find elsewhere on the Amalfi at Positano and Sorrento, Ravello remains strangely undiscovered. Strange, given how many have sought its refuge and how few have ever wanted to leave.

Your expert guide will take you through this wonderful town, explaining its past and leaving you to soak in the beauty of its present. To bring your Pompeii and Amalfi Coast Tour to an unforgettable end, she will accompany you the short distance to Villa Rufolo - a palace whose intriguing history and littoral panoramas will transport you to another world.

Savour the stunning views of Villa Rufolo

Of all Amalfi's villas, Villa Rufolo boasts the richest history. Dating back to the 13th century, the coastal villa featured in Boccaccio's Decameron - one of the earliest texts of the Renaissance. The Rufolo family hosted royalty here, including King Robert II of Naples. But over the centuries the villa fell into disrepair until many of its rooms collapsed into ruin.

The 19th century saw Villa Rufolo's revival. A Scottish botanist named Francis Neville Reid restored it to pride, rebuilding its walls and replanting its gardens. When the German composer Richard Wagner visited in 1880, he was so impressed with its beauty that he stayed on in Ravello longer than anticipated to complete his Parsifal among its magnificent surroundings.

Ravello has since become a musical Mecca, earning it the name "La Città di Musica" - the city of music. Each summer, the city hosts a series of concerts with Villa Rufolo's terrace becoming a stage overlooking the sea. Visit Villa Rufolo and its gardens on your Pompeii and Amalfi Coast Tour and you'll perfectly understand the appeal.
