TOUR DESCRIPTION:

A wonderful opportunity to leave the city with its lights and busy streets and drive along the quiet roads of the Umbrian region surrounded by gently rolling green hills and interspersed with lovely small villages.

We will be driving along the motorway to the North of Rome, leaving behind us a number of lovely villages and towns standing on top of hills. In a couple of hours we will arrive at beautiful Assisi, hometown of St Francis, a special place that is still imbued with the saint’s spiritual energy.

The Basilica of St Francis is a truly must-see, with its upper and lower church, a unique masterpiece of medieval architecture and painting. It boasts frescoes by some of the greatest masters of the 13th and 14th century: Giotto, Cimabue and Simone Martini. It was restored after the heavy damages of the earthquake in September 1997.

We will then be visiting the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the oldest church in town, the Basilica of Santa Chiara, the first woman to be joining the spiritual movement founded by St Francis, and obviously the imposing church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, which hosts the moving Porziuncola, the chapel that St Francis restored with his own hands, which became his home, as well as his followers’.

After lunch at a typical restaurant serving genuine local dishes accompanied by delicious local wines we will then conclude our tour of Assisi with a visit to the Eremo delle Carceri, located four km above Assisi, a hermitage immersed in the beautiful and luxuriant wood surrounding the town.  It was the place where St Francis and many other holy men retired to pray and meditate.
