Tour description

Spend a divine day at the pope's summer residence of Castel Gandolfo as part of the new and exclusive collaboration between the Vatican Museums and our Rome-based cooking school. Indulge in a cooking class and lunch at the Pope’s farm. Tour the magnificent apostolic palace of Castel Gandolfo. And soak up the charming atmosphere of this classic Italian hilltop town.

Reminiscent of Tuscany’s fabled landscape, the Alban hills are 20 km from central Rome. For millennia, they have offered a rural refuge for Romans retreating to the countryside. Castel Gandolfo is the finest of the hilltop towns, situated at an exquisite spot overlooking the sapphire volcanic lake.

The infamous emperor Domitian first built a summer villa here in the 1st century AD. Its ruins still stand within the estate of the Pontifical Villas. We invite you to enjoy this splendid part of the Roman countryside as Popes have been doing since the 16th century.

Your day starts in Rome, where we've laid on a driver for your visit to the Pope's summer residence

Begin with a visit to the apostolic palace, home to an exhibition of curated artifacts and stories of the Popes who resided here.

We have arranged a golf cart or minivan to take you around Castel Gandolfo's meticulously kept grounds. Explore the Roman amphitheater and intriguing antiquarium. Discover the ancient crypto portico and sculpted Barberini gardens, one of the finest examples of landscaped gardens in Italy.

Embark on your own culinary adventure at the Papal Farm

The organic farm covers 50 acres and is home to cows, free range chickens, bees, and a sprawling vegetable garden. The farm also produces its own olive oil and dairy products.

Here, you meet your professional chef with whom you will learn the traditional methods of Italian cooking. Roll your own authentic fresh pasta by hand and conjure up succulent desserts from scratch. Of course using fresh ingredients harvested from the Pope’s farm itself.

Lunch is then served with the food you have prepared — an unforgettable Italian feast perfectly complemented by specially selected local wine.

Wander the historic village of Castel Gandolfo after lunch

We suggest seeking out a table in the piazza, ordering one last gelato, and taking the time to savor the memories of this truly unforgettable experience.

There is also the option to upgrade this tour to a full Papal experience with our private full day VIP tour, which includes early and exclusive access to the Sistine Chapel at 7:30 am.
