Best investment you'll make in Rome
This is directed at budget travelers. No need for the 1st class train, find Air B&B or other cheap accommodations (but make sure they are relatively central and SAFE- Rome is a big city). It's not too hard to eat cheap, public transportation is totally unreliable but also cheap...BUT. Unlike most of the other highlights of Rome, you will not experience the Vatican properly without an expert guide and early access. There is just too much to digest, but these guides, PhDs in Vatican art and history, have it honed into a tour that will leave you breathless. The early access means getting an hour head-start on the hordes to follow...our guide was able to explain, panel by panel, each meaning and idiosyncrasy of the Sistine Chapel and as a non-Catholic not schooled in art history, it was absolutely mesmerizing. This is only an anecdote, but I know there's alot of competition for your tour dollars - and maybe you don't need to have an in-depth explanation of every aquifer in Rome. But this...you must, there is no other way to experience the depth of the majesty.

Our group was small, only 4 of us with our guide so it was wonderful. Marilena gave us lots of information based on her many years as a Vatican guide. Many beautiful sculptures, tapestries and more in the museum. The Sistine chapel was stunning and she gave us time alone to enjoy. Then on to St. Peter's. Well worth the price for the quick entry and wealth of information.

Our guide Barbara P customized our Vatican tour, focusing on our interests. She truly maximized the value of our visit and made great use of limited time, expertly finding ways thru and around the crowds. Magnifico!

Not cheap, but worth every penny!
We paid for the early morning (skip the queue) tour, and were lucky to have only our group of 4 on the tour. Didn't know quite what to expect, but we were blown away with everything about the Vatican and Vatican museums, Sistine Chapel, St Peter's etc! Our guide, Michele (Michael), was amazing and so knowledgeable - and very happy to share all he knew for us! It was lovely to be able to go into the Sistine Chapel before the crowds arrived, and just to be able to sit and stare in awe (and silence!) at the amazing 'artwork' of Michelangelo. The museums were fantastic - and Michele was able to share all sorts of information that we would not have known if we had not chosen to do a guided tour. As I said, not cheap, but worth every penny!

Amazing small group tour
My friend and I did the Early Morning Vatican Small Group Tour. This is a must if you are interested in history and art. The guide was very informative. The tour was the right length - we did not feel rushed but it also was not too long. The guide pointed out so many interesting things and threw in a joke every now and then. Definitely worth the cost --- you skip the massive line and when you see the bigger groups you will be grateful for the small group of 10-12.
