Wonderful way to spend 3 hours in rome

Susanna took us on a wonderful tour of the Colloseum, including the underground, Forum and Palatine Hill. Her knowledge and appreciation for history were excellent. I would definitely recommend Walks Inside Rome and The Tour Guy. They sent out reminders before the tour and gave very clear instructions for our meeting place. A wonderful way to spend 3 hours in Rome.

Cecilia was AMAZING!

Cecilia was AMAZING! We had the best day touring the Vatican, the Colosseum, and Forum. Everything was planned to perfection and so seamless. Not to mention, Cecilia was the most knowledgeable, fun, and accommodating tour guide we have ever had. Thank you thank you!!!

Just Wow!

I just returned from a Viking cruise in the Mediterranean, ending in Rome. While on my Viking cruise, I had a tour at every port, via Viking, including tours in Athens, Turkey, Crete, & Messina. Some were included with my cruise and some were additional cost for a more detailed excursion. These were nice tours with Ephesus being my favorite!, until my artival in Rome. We extended our Viking tour by adding 2 days In Rome, and Viking handled the hotel, airport transfer etc., Viking is an amazing company to cruise with and we loved our trip! I decided to book my own tours in Rome and via online research found WIR, And just Wow! The tours with Walks Inside Rome were beyond phenomenal. The depth of knowledge of our tour guides, Christina for Colosseum area including the Pantheon, & Flavia for Vatican & Sistine Chapel made our trip so special. The guides were so kind, informative, knowledgeable and a joy to spend the day with. If you are going to Rome, and want to know and understand what you are seeing, book with WIR. Best decision ever and worth every dime! And, Valentina's dinner suggestion, beyond expectations! A beautiful end to our dream vacation! Thank you all so much! Andrea

Great tour

Our guide, Sergio, was great. Unfortunately, the underground portion of the tour was in Italian (we speak English), but Sergio was good about quietly keeping us informed of what the Italian guide was saying, so it was great. He was also very knowledgable about the Forum, which was also fascinating. Directions were also crystal clear. I would do again.

Seeing this is really incredible. Such an impressive site and area. The tour was fantastic, including the tour guide really making an effort to make everyone entertained including our multi-generation family and 7 year old daughter. By going in through the gladiators gate, we had a different view and perspective, and were not able to go up to the higher areas, but it was outstanding as it was. The tour that continued through the surrounding areas was equally impressive. It was really hot, and I wish we'd come better prepared with water and snacks (especially as the 7 y.o. became hot, tired, and hungry). Even with our shortcomings and the heat, the tour was really impressive to match the sites.

We had a lovely experience with Elena!

Highly recommend booking a private experience, if you can — the attention and flexibility is worth it. My partner and I had booked a tour including the Sistine Chapel and Colosseum a few weeks before Pope Francis died. As it turned out, the conclave began on the day we were set to tour at the Vatican! While we missed the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica, Elena went out of her way to make a new agenda for the two of us, which showcased her expertise in archaeology! She took us to the Roman Forum (which was not originally included in our itinerary), so that we wouldn’t have to deal with the crowds at the Vatican, and she had so much to share. Along the way, Elena helped us visualize what once was with her remarkable collection of photos and storytelling. While we’re sad to have missed the Sistine Chapel, the day ended on a high note at Colosseum. We would gladly learn from Elena again!

Coliseum, roman forum - marina took us through it all

We had an amazing experience with Marina after our breakfast (post Sistine Chapel tour with Irene) touring St. Peter's Basilica, the Coliseum and Roman Forum. Marina was so knowledgeable and guided us throughout the church, pointing out things we never would have picked up on during the route. We got to the coliseum and it was a hot day so she effortlessly kept us in the shade while still explaining the history, and ins and outs of the magnificent coliseum. She answered all our questions, took many photos, and kept us engaged despite the June weather in Rome being hot and dry! 100/100 would recommend - thank you Marina for a great time and showing us a piece of Rome's great history!

Colosseum Tours

Visiting Rome? A must during your stay in the capital is the Colosseum, an unmissable symbol of ancient Roman life. Also known as the Flavian Amphitheater, its name derives from “colossal” statue of the emperor Nero which once stood outside. Colossal in name, colossal in nature, the Colosseum was in fact the largest amphitheater ever built in the Roman Empire. Thanks to Walks Inside Rome’s Colosseum Tours, you too can experience a complete immersion in the beating heart of ancient Rome, between the underground and the arena of this amphitheater and the spectacular ruins of the Roman Forum. So journey back in time, to the glorious days of a great empire, inside the iconic Colosseum.

The Colosseum: behold the splendor and decay of the past

A great tourist attraction, with more than 7 million visitors a year, the imposing Flavian Amphitheater in 1980 has been declared a World Heritage Site together with the entire historic center of Rome within the city walls in their widest extension.

Considered one of the most famous tourist attractions in the world, the building (86 meters long and 54 meters wide) was built between 70 and 80 AD during the reign of the emperors Vespasian and Titus to accommodate up to 50,000 people (or even 80,000). It was used to entertain crowds with gladiator games and animal hunts, which were classic Ancient Roman forms of entertainment. Made of marble and limestone, the structure has since been damaged by earthquakes and various looting but remains an impressive vestige of the magnificence of Ancient Rome.

The Colosseum has 80 entrances and its system of corridors and stairs is still used today as a reference point for the construction of football stadiums. Today, visitors to the Colosseum enter the building from the south side, on the other hand, access is not as fast as in the days of the Roman Empire, it is better to get scheduled entrance ticket reservations.

The Colosseum tour starts on the 2nd floor. The different floors, four in all, were all built in different styles: Doric style for the 1st floor, Ionic style for the 2nd and Corinthian style for the 3rd. The floor of the arena consisted of a wooden floor covered with sand. Below you will see the Hypogeum: a tunnel system where training rooms, wild animal cages and death row prisoners once stood.

Essential visits to penetrate and understand the vestiges and lust of the past

With your local guide, you will explore and learn more about the history of the most famous monument in Rome. They will enthusiastically tell you stories and anecdotes about the people who fought in the arenas and the emperors who ruled them.
