Tour description

Every summer on Friday nights, the Vatican opens its doors to grant visitors access to the beautiful halls of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. Exploring the Vatican's magnificent collection in the serene evening ambience is the perfect way to wind down after basking in the warm heat of the day. Our expertly guided tour walks you and a maximum of 11 others through the highlights of the Vatican Museums where you'll encounter the unrivalled papal collection of classical antiquities.

Lose yourself among the mezmerising frescoes of the Raphael Rooms, explore the many halls and galleries people from all around the world aspire to see with their own eyes, and visit Michelangelo's masterpiece, the Sistine Chapel, when it's enhanced by the evening atmosphere and warm glow of torches from the garden.

Step inside the Vatican Museums just before sunset

Entering the Vatican Museums, you and your small group will start exploring the highlights of its vast collection. Among the characters you'll meet are Laocoön and his sons - one of the most famous statues of antiquity and a work of art that drips paternal pathos - and the busts of the Roman emperors who made the Roman Empire the unparalleled power that it was.

Explore the Gallery of Maps, Gallery of the Candelabra, and Gallery of Tapestries

As you make your way through the Vatican Museums, your guide will take you on a historical and cultural journey through its most important collections. We'll explore the Gallery of Maps, a stunning frescoed corridor that offers a window into how cartographers used to view their world. We'll walk through the Gallery of the Candelabra, a stunning room lined with ancient sculptures and, perhaps unsurprisingly, an enormous, ornate candelabra. And we'll discover the Gallery of Tapestries, whose intricate Flemish designs narrate some of the most famous stories in western culture.

Visit the Raphael Rooms

Most visitors make their pilgrimage to the Vatican to see Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel. Few take the time to stop off at the papal rooms painted by his contemporary and rival, Raphael. The Raphael Rooms are made up of former papal offices decorated with some of the most elaborate frescoes ever painted. Among them is the famous School of Athens, an instantly recognizable scene featuring some of antiquity's most prominent philosophers. Discover this and more as your expert guide walks you through them.

Marvel at Michelangelo's masterpiece: the Sistine Chapel

The Sistine Chapel is comparable only to the Colosseum as the most visited attraction in Rome. Its ceiling frescoes, which the Great Master Michelangelo single-handedly painted while on his back, almost defy belief, seeming more the work of the divine than of one man with a prolific legacy. Bathed in the torchlight of the garden outside, the Sistine Chapel is simply stunning at night, making it the perfect finale to your Vatican adventure.

Please note: We do not visit Saint Peter’s Basilica, as it is closed to the public during the evenings. Instead, we'll dedicate more time to diving deeper into the treasures of the world-famous Vatican Museums.

Please note that shoulders and knees need to be covered during the tour. No vests or shorts and skirts above the knees will be allowed inside the Vatican Museums.
